When first glancing through the specs, this comparison may seem like a no brainer for two reasons. Firstly, the LG Viewty appears to have everything that a mobile phone could possibly require, and secondly, it has all these things and still maintains a pretty slim and sleek profile. Still, a closer look reveals that, as is often the case, first appearances aren’t always right, and true beauty is not just skin deep.

Comparing Features of LG Viewty and LG Venus

While on the topic of size, both of these compare pretty well with each other. On a technical basis, the LG Venus is ever so slightly smaller, by a millimetre here and a millimetre there. Perhaps every little bit does count, but to be completely honest, it would take either good measuring or comparing both the phones side by side to notice the difference.

One difference that doesn’t take too much to notice however is that of the display screens themselves, where the LG Viewty has a clear advantage. Weighing in at 3 inches, it is a whole inch bigger than that of the LG Venus, and although there is a reason for this that shall be apparent later, a bigger screen generally gives more options to everything from web browsing to viewing pictures.

Speaking of pictures, the cameras that both phones have provide another huge difference. Sadly, the 3 megapixel camera of the LG Venus, despite the autofocus and digital zoom, just can’t quite compare to the 5 megapixel camera that the LG Viewty has, with its very own Schneider-Kreuznach lens, autofocus and Smartlight feature that helps out with dark backdrops. Simply put, the LG Viewty provides some of the best image captures that mobile phones have to offer, whereas the LG Venus provides average ability that is by no means nearly as good.

One of the biggest differences however lies with the user interface itself. Short version is, both the LG Venus and LG Viewty offer similar options of differing natures. Where the LG Viewty has a full touch screen, the LG Venus has a mini panel of touch sensitive buttons that account for the 1 inch lesser display size. Although the touch screen of the LG Viewty is a great feature, so too is the panel that the LG Venus has. Most notably, the panel of the LG Venus morphs its icons according to function, displaying only those connected to the task being performed at any given time. This range, coupled with the slide-out keypad on the LG Venus that, again, the LG Viewty does not posses, allows for entirely new options in usage, and increased flexibility.

Whether or not the user interface itself is reason enough to justify the LG Venus’ lesser features when compared to the LG Viewty is up for debate. No matter how it is put however, the LG Venus does have its very own attractive features despite being on a lower scale of technology than the LG Viewty. In the end, which is better is a matter of personal choice.

LG’s Chocolate series of mobile devices has always been fun to review, after all, this is a series of practical and sensibly designed mobile phones that focus on function over excessiveness that ultimately allows for LG to market these devices at more reasonable prices.

You can just imagine our total and absolute disappointment at the recent BL40 Chocolate Touch which does not seem in line with the rest of this great mobile series. Now we are rejoicing at the arrival of the LG BL20 Chocolate, this model has gone back to the important aspects of the Chocolate series and is a great mobile device through and through.

Simple and Stylish

The most noticeable feature of the BL20 (and all other mobile phones) is its external appearance. Thanks to the non-touch screen display, this device is freed from the clone-type look present with many other devices today. Instead, the BL20 uses a unique touch sensitive control panel and a more traditional, yet sleek stylish slide out keypad.

The colors are breathtakingly good. The mainly black surface is accented by the red of the control pad icons and the entire face of the slide out keyboard is painted in bright red. This creates an amazing color contrast when you slide out the keypad. The size of the device is pretty slim and it will fit in your hand and your pocket just right.

Simple and Practical Specs

The BL20 has 2.4 inch screen with 262k colors; at its size, it’s practical that it is not a touch screen. Instead, it is the navigation keys below the screen that are touch sensitive. This creates a very smooth and practical approach to using the mobile phone. Small touch screens will get obscured when you move you finger over them and it simply is not a practical thing to do.

Touch screens also make a mobile phone cost more. This is why it is sometimes wiser to do without a touch screen when it is not needed in a device. The BL20 also comes with a 5 mega pixel camera, LED flash and Schnieder-Kreuznach optic lenses. It is a pretty hefty camera for such a non-top-tier mobile phone that one would wonder if this is still practical. In our honest opinion, this could have been a 3.2 mega pixel camera and none would be the wiser. Still, if you feel like taking photos in full 2560×1920 pixels resolution, then this is a pretty impressive feature.

Other Capabilities for the BL20

Aside from the touchpad and the 5 mega pixel camera, the LG BL20 Chocolate comes packed with practical features. The memory is minimal at 60MB and you will definitely be using an SD card especially for storing the large resolution photos.

This mobile phone has no WiFi, but you still get 3G, GPRS and EDGE connectivity, here’s to hoping for a pre-installed browser that works just as good as Opera mobile. It also has an FM radio, Bluetooth, and a 900mAh lithium ion battery that should keep you powered for days on end.

There is no denying that based on looks alone, the LG GW550 definitely shows more than just a little semblance of the famed Nokia E71. LG has surely picked the right mobile to clone as it has chosen one of the best in the business. In the world of Smartphones, the E71 is definitely on top of the food chain. Testament to this fact was its success in topping the likes of the BlackBerry or the iPhone as the best Smartphone of 2008 – according to TIME Magazine, that is. Although it is true that the GW550 looks like the E71, the question now is whether it is able to live up to the high standards set by the outstanding Nokia Smartphone.

Keep in mind that the E71 was released more than a year prior to the GW550 which means that we should definitely expect more from the latter due to advancements in mobile technology over the past year.

Design-wise

As mentioned earlier, the GW550 physically looks like an E71 clone. However, a closer look will reveal that the LG clone is a bit bigger as it measures 116 x 62 x 12 mm (compared to the E71’s 114 x 57 x 10 mm dimensions). However, the GW550 is around 1.5 grams lighter than its counterpart which weighs 127 grams.

Both have almost exactly the same size screen (2.4 for the GW550 and 2.36 for the E71). Both also have a 320 x 280-pixel ratio as well as the same TFT type screen. However, the E71 has a more vivid display as it is capable of up to 16M colours compared to the GW550’s 65K colour capability. As for the QWERTY keypad, the GW550 pretty much copied the entire pad of the E71 – from the letters all the way to the function keys.

Feature-wise

When it comes to connectivity, both have pretty much the same specs except that the E71 has a few advantages here and there. The biggest disparity is with Wi-Fi connectivity which is definitely a notable absence on the LG GW550. Both devices have the same caliber camera at 3.15-Megapixels. It is arguable which of the two have the better operating system as the E71 sports version 9.2 of the Symbian OS while the GW550 opted for version 6.1 of Windows Mobile.

Based on what we have, it is safe to say that the E71 is still a bit Smarter that the GW550 – especially when you consider the difference in their release dates. Nonetheless, it is still a commendable effort from LG.
