But that’s not all – you can also get:

- Express delivery (before 1pm) for the discounted rate of £4.49 per item

- Evening delivery (same day) for the discounted rate of £7.49 per item, if you live in Birmingham or London

- The ability to share your benefits with up to four other people in your household

There’s no minimum order value, meaning there’s no more buying unnecessary stuff just to get up to the £15 free Super Saver Delivery threshold. If you want to buy the Now 18 CD and listen to it in the car on the way to work in a couple of days, you can.

Best of all, for a short period Amazon are offering Amazon customers who have not previously used Amazon Prime with a free month’s trial of the service. If you’re looking to buy a new TV or home furnishings from Amazon, it may be worth taking a look to see if you can start a trial and get quicker and free delivery. As with any freebie, there are a few catches and clauses – if you don’t cancel the service by the end of the month, Amazon will automatically start to bill you for the service, although £49 a year works out at just about £4 per month, which isn’t too bad, and you could probably spend that amount on delivery from Amazon already. Free delivery is only available on certain items, and you can’t get free delivery if you live in some ridiculously remote offshore cave in the British Isles – but have a look at the Amazon website for details.

One in three shoppers feel their consumer rights have been ignored when trying to return goods or get a refund.

In a survey* for the ‘Know Your Consumer Rights’ campaign nearly 40 per cent of men and just over 30 per cent of women said that they felt retailers had attempted to dismiss their claims when they’ve tried to return goods or get a refund.

Ann Hopwood, of Kirkby-Stephen in Cumbria, was glad she stuck to her guns after feeling her rights were ignored after being refused a refund for an engagement ring.

“After buying an engagement ring from Argos in December 2007 I was disappointed when in June this year two of the diamonds fell out of the setting.

I took the £300 ring back to Argos but they said that the goods were outside of the guarantee period so I’d have to pay for any repairs. I wasn’t impressed, to put it mildly.
I then got in touch with Consumer Direct to find out exactly what my rights were. They advised me of my statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act. If it can be proved that they goods are not of satisfactory quality, then the trader is required to offer a free repair or like-for-like replacement.

The next step was to download a template letter from the Consumer Direct website and send it by recorded delivery to Argos, requesting a reply within 14 days.
Argos replied straightaway and offered a full refund of the £300!

Overall I was happy with the service once I got my refund. I’m a bit more wary and alert when buying goods now, but it would take more than that to put me off shopping!”

The ‘Know Your Consumer Rights’ campaign aims to educate shoppers about their three key rights – “goods must fit the description given, be of satisfactory quality and suitable for purpose”. WAN optimization is one of the techniques to improve the speed of functional tools so as to maximize the business performance and to proactively solve the problems. A WAN is a Wide Area Network which describes the network connectivity spread through a large area and in comparison to the local networks has a low bandwidth with high latency connectivity to an ISP. The remote offices can get benefited by this and such server-less branch offices will be orchestrated by the addition of features like DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and DNS (Domain Name System). The market of WOCs have been developing to such an extent that the WOC features can be integrated with other networking equipments such as routers.

Now, how it affects the business performance. Whenever you are handling a business application, this often gets delayed because of the congestion in traffic. The entry of spams also hinders the performance at times.

Although a lot of techniques are used to speed up traffic across the WAN and to increase the overall response time, a few of them are:

Shaping of applications: Here, the data usage is controlled by prioritizing the traffic and by location of the data patterns. This is applicable to both point to point leased lines and internet connections.

Proxy or Caching: This mechanism is reliable on human behaviour of retrieving the data on repeated basis which is suitable for point to point leased lines but can also be used for Internet connections and VPN tunnels.

Spoofing of protocols: This may bundle up several requests from the chatty application protocols into one. This is suitable for point to point WAN links.

Compression of data: Zips the data files and so reduces congestion in the network. This is suitable for point to point leased lines.

Prevention of gridlock: This is done by limiting the various connections so that there is prevention of access gridlock in routers and access points. Used for WAN links.

Deploying better protocols: Due to the TCP protocol, there is congestion in the traffic, so better protocols should be deployed than this.

Above all, the WAN optimization will lead to a significant enhancement of response time and network security finally improving the client’s business performance.

Of course the final player in the channel is important to a consumer but the business of all the intermediaries gets affected. The understanding of consumer behaviour helps in identifying the weak points and also reflects the positive aspect of any business.

It is the behaviour of the consumer which impacts their decision to purchase or not purchase the product. Depending on their decision and their usage, an organization decides which products to manufacture and to continue. The positioning of the product is dependant on the consumption of the product and this behaviour of consumers may be related to any kind of products or services. The consumer behaviour also reflects the trends in the national growth and economy.

The study by Engel has revealed certain basic facts based on which he designed four models to ascertain consumer behaviour.

It was found out in the study that the purchases made by consumers are mainly to satiate their demands and to solve the underlying problem. If a consumer purchases a product in order to fulfill his basic need, it can be said the purchase was necessity-driven and it can be analyzed from this aspect as to what motivates or drives a consumer to purchase a product. If a consumer does an impulse purchase, he does it without any preconceived notion or well-thought over buying of a product. The product in this case seems to be so attractive or beneficial to a consumer that he immediately buys the product. So, this makes us understand that a product should have certain unique attributes to lure the customer. In some of the product categories, there are a number of options to choose from and it becomes difficult for the customer to reach a certain decision. Also it is difficult for the seller to sell his product as he needs to convince a lot by paying thrust on his product as against his competitors.

Now, let us understand how the behaviour of consumer affects a marketer or what are the benefits of understanding consumer behaviour.

•It helps the marketer to take vital decisions with respect to designing of future marketing strategies. What kind of promotional offers or marketing campaigns need to be undertaken.

•Whether the marketer should stick to the same product, extend the product portfolio, or probably launch a new product.
