Although many retailers, such as Play.com, now include free delivery in their product prices, unfortunately the web’s largest retailer Amazon still hasn’t cottoned on to this craze. Standard first class delivery from Amazon can be expensive – for example an electronics item could cost up to £5.88 to be delivered (or for Royal Mail to lose it). Fortunately for a short period of time, Amazon is now offering all customers a month’s worth of free next day deliveries, courtesy of their Amazon Prime service.

Amazon Prime is a subscription service from Amazon, a bit like a golf club, or paying to get into the House of Lords. You pay Amazon £49 a year, and get free stuff and preferential treatment in exchange for your hard earned cash. One of these treats is unlimited free next day delivery on all qualifying products, so if you’re a serial Amazon shopper, this could be quite a worthwhile service to have under your belt. But that’s not all – you can also get:

- Express delivery (before 1pm) for the discounted rate of £4.49 per item

- Evening delivery (same day) for the discounted rate of £7.49 per item, if you live in Birmingham or London

- The ability to share your benefits with up to four other people in your household

There’s no minimum order value, meaning there’s no more buying unnecessary stuff just to get up to the £15 free Super Saver Delivery threshold. If you want to buy the Now 18 CD and listen to it in the car on the way to work in a couple of days, you can.

Best of all, for a short period Amazon are offering Amazon customers who have not previously used Amazon Prime with a free month’s trial of the service. If you’re looking to buy a new TV or home furnishings from Amazon, it may be worth taking a look to see if you can start a trial and get quicker and free delivery. As with any freebie, there are a few catches and clauses – if you don’t cancel the service by the end of the month, Amazon will automatically start to bill you for the service, although £49 a year works out at just about £4 per month, which isn’t too bad, and you could probably spend that amount on delivery from Amazon already. Free delivery is only available on certain items, and you can’t get free delivery if you live in some ridiculously remote offshore cave in the British Isles – but have a look at the Amazon website for details.

Click here for more information on free next day delivery with a month’s free trial of Amazon Prime. Give it a go if you’re shopping with Amazon, you’ve got nothing to lose!

We here at Shopping Place are big fans of The Apprentice. If you were privileged enough to watch the show last night, you’ll have witnessed probably the biggest mistake mankind has ever made concerning oil. And this time we’re not talking about climate change.

Paula, the team manager of Empire, was sadly fired in last night’s episode despite making what seemed to be possibly the best set of products seen this series – the Rock Poole seaweed based soap and shower gel. Despite the pathetic leadership of rival team leader Noorul, Paula found herself in Sir Alan’s firing line after producing a loss of £68.04. Her mistake? Mixing up cedarwood oil and sandalwood oil.

Whilst Empire insisted that the two names sounded the same (the only thing we can see in common is the word ‘wood’), the difference in terms of cost was about £1170 per kilo. Cause we’re the scientific type, we’ve had a look on Wikipedia and can inform you with the following:

“Sandalwood essential oil provides perfumes with a striking wood base note. Sandalwood smells not unlike other wood scents, except it has a bright and fresh edge with few natural analogues. When used in smaller proportions in a perfume, it is an excellent fixative to enhance the head space of other fragrances. The oil from sandalwood is widely used in the cosmetic industry and is expensive.”

OK, sounds good, but what about cedarwood?

“Cedar wood and cedar oil is known to be a natural repellent to moths, hence cedar is a popular lining for modern-day closets in which woolens are stored. This specific use of cedar is mentioned in The Iliad (Book 24), referring to the cedar-roofed or lined storage chamber where Priam goes to fetch treasures to be used as ransom.”

Personally I wouldn’t want moth repellant in my soap, however if the team had used cedarwood instead of the more expensive sandalwood, they would have rightly won the task with a profit of £590. Admittedly it didn’t help either that the team sporting a trainee stockbroker (in the form of Ben) couldn’t do some simple primary school maths, and thought ingredients costing £700 would cost a couple of quid. That comes firmly under the category of ‘epic fail’.

If you saw the after-show, The Apprentice – You’re Fired, afterwards on BBC2, you’ll have seen Paula given a book as a leaving gift. We’ve had a look on the internet, and you too can own this essential (pun intended) guide to your essential oils, and pretend to be your favourite Apprentice star. It’s called ‘The Essential Oils Handbook: All the Oils You Will Ever Need for Health, Vitality and Well-being’ and you can buy it from Amazon now for the measly price of £6.99 delivered. The book costs £7 – the team wasted £700 on ingredients. Sounds like a 100x markup to me. Had the team known about this book beforehand, it would’ve been a no-brainer, and could have kept Paula in a job.

So now you too can avoid making the fatal mistake of mixing up your sandalwood and cedarwood. If you get onto the next series of The Apprentice and this book ends up saving your skin in the boardroom – I’ll expect a cheque through the post.

One in three shoppers feel their consumer rights have been ignored when trying to return goods or get a refund.

In a survey* for the ‘Know Your Consumer Rights’ campaign nearly 40 per cent of men and just over 30 per cent of women said that they felt retailers had attempted to dismiss their claims when they’ve tried to return goods or get a refund.

Ann Hopwood, of Kirkby-Stephen in Cumbria, was glad she stuck to her guns after feeling her rights were ignored after being refused a refund for an engagement ring.

“After buying an engagement ring from Argos in December 2007 I was disappointed when in June this year two of the diamonds fell out of the setting.

I took the £300 ring back to Argos but they said that the goods were outside of the guarantee period so I’d have to pay for any repairs. I wasn’t impressed, to put it mildly.
I then got in touch with Consumer Direct to find out exactly what my rights were. They advised me of my statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act. If it can be proved that they goods are not of satisfactory quality, then the trader is required to offer a free repair or like-for-like replacement.

The next step was to download a template letter from the Consumer Direct website and send it by recorded delivery to Argos, requesting a reply within 14 days.
Argos replied straightaway and offered a full refund of the £300!

Overall I was happy with the service once I got my refund. I’m a bit more wary and alert when buying goods now, but it would take more than that to put me off shopping!”

It pays to know your rights. The ‘Know Your Consumer Rights’ campaign aims to educate shoppers about their three key rights – “goods must fit the description given, be of satisfactory quality and suitable for purpose”. For further information and clear, practical advice contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 or visit the website www.consumerdirect.gov.uk.

Anyone visiting the Consumer Direct web site can test their Consumer rights knowledge by taking part in an online quiz. Test your knowledge for the chance to win £150 worth of shopping vouchers.

(*The survey was conducted by BMRB and questioned 2,009 people in England, Scotland and Wales. Further information is available at www.bis.gov.uk)

Home Design Plans

It is a fact that a house is never truly a home if devoid of some personal touches applied by the homeowner. It is the choice to design every portion of your house in preparing custom house plans is perhaps the best way to achieve the desired personal touch and really revolutionize your house into a home. With the help of a contractor, you can always tailor every part of your house to suit your needs and reflect your personality. If you are new to house plans and are not sure how to draft them, then hiring an experienced contractor is the key to success. Moreover, even if you feel confident in designing and drawing up the home design plans, the help from a professional will ensure that the progression is standardized and that the results are much more satisfying.

While going in for a home design plan, there are many considerations that require your attention. These considerations are essential to follow if you choose to design your own home. Deciding the budget before you start wit the home design plan is absolutely necessary and can be considered as a first step. Employing an experienced and reputed home design contractor to help you with the design process is also an important step. The process of designing begins with the details of designs and requirements you have in mind. If you are unsure about the designs, you can have a look at house and home books and also a quick search on he Internet will help you to form an aesthetic design. This is the most challenging part of the process as you will have considerable options to choose from. Once you have finalized the designs you can begin to actually outline the house design plans.

It is better to keep in mind that at any time before the plans for your custom home are finalized, you can opt to revise and change them. The changes would get difficult once the building process begins. Thus before you start with the actual building work, make sure that you are absolutely comfortable with the house design plan. Many home design services offer the advantage of pre-designed home plans in a variety of floor plans, and while these can save you money as well as time in the short term by offering the convenience of the ready-made home designs. But the chances are that these may not be exactly what you are looking for and changes may cost a minor fortune. Not all home plans may be appropriate for your available lot, and you may find yourself with home plans which are difficult to adjust. The most satisfying home plans are those that offer enough space for your family’s style of living as well as the potential to grow with your needs. You should also have the ability to plan for additional construction if the need arises. Your outdoor living should also be part of your home plans. Access to you home and its interior should be easy as well as secure.

By: David

About the Author:

Sometimes a bad hair day can be all it takes to make your whole day seem like nothing is going right. You know what I mean too, even if this statement sounds absurd. Why is it that you seem to command more positive attention when you feel good about the way your hair looks?

Well, it’s arguably because confidence is all in your head, but it’s also true that well kept, shiny, lustrous and healthy hair is a true hallmark of beauty, respect and admiration in our society. Healthy looking hair is also usually considered a sign of health. It’s the ornament that crowns our head, and through the good and bad times, it’s ours to look after and take care of the best we can.

So, what if you can’t afford to be spending big bucks at the salon getting fancy hair treatments and $50 haircuts all the time? And what if you don’t care to spend your money on the treatments you can do at home that sometimes run at just as high a cost, minus labor of course, that you can buy from high end salons?

Well, there’s good news, because you can get bouncier, healthier and shinier hair by using some simple, cheap and easy to obtain products that some people may even keep in their homes as habit as a remedy against dry, dull and brittle hair. The first is one of my favorites, and although you may have to get over the initial shock of the smell when you use this on your head, you will love the results it gives when you’re through.

What household hair remedy am I talking about? Vinegar! Yep, good old fashioned vinegar works as a great shine booster and even helps to cleanse the buildup off of the hair that’s left from styling products, dirt, dust, and other environmental factors that lend themselves to dull looking hair.

I usually use apple cider vinegar, which is also a great tonic for the inside of the body as well as many of you may have read or heard in the past. In fact, organic apple cider vinegar, affectionately referred to by it’s dedicated users as “ACV”, has many healing properties beyond your hair if you care to ever read up on that.

What you can do for the vinegar hair rinse is take a good amount of the vinegar up to the shower in a cup. I’d say about one to one and a half cups is good so that you can thoroughly get all of your hair when dousing it.

I like to do my vinegar rinse before I shampoo, because of the smell. This will minimize any unpleasant odor being left behind in your hair, and will prep the hair for the shampoo, which will further cleanse it in preparation for your conditioner.

After you rinse, shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo, then condition the hair with something that is highly emollient. Finish it off with an ice cold water rinse, and you’ll have a head of bouncy, shockingly shiny hair, and you will have accomplished buildup removal at the same time, and scalp therapy as well.

The second home remedy for dry or dull hair is to use beer. You can use the same method that I went over with the apple cider vinegar for this. Beer has a lot of nutrients believe it or not, that are good for the hair, and it will also help to cleanse impurities and prep it for a good conditioning, leaving the hair shaft smooth so that you get maximum shine and reflection.

Now, if you’re looking more for a protein mask type of treatment, this one may also sound weird, but some love this for the feeling of added thickness to the hair and the fact that they are using a pure protein on the hair which can help strengthen it. What food item am I referring to? Eggs!

That’s right, you can use raw eggs (careful not to get any in your mouth!), as a mask on your hair, letting it set in your damp hair for about fifteen to twenty minutes, then rinsing it out, shampooing and conditioning.

Whatever home remedy for your hair you choose, remember that there’s almost always a cheaper way to achieve beauty, you just have to know where in your fridge or cupboard to find it!

By: Danna Schneider

About the Author:

Home exercise is the new phenomenon in fitness, and the explosive growth of home exercise equipment is ample proof. It’s easy to see why many individuals would be interested in home exercise routines. You can get great results exercising at home, as long as you know what you are doing.

All it takes to get results at home is an exercise mat, some free weights (dumbbells) and exercise tubings. Even if you don’t have all these tools, there are several exercises you can do around the house. You can always try exercises that use your own body weight. The secret to success is to exercise the right way without hurting yourself.

At home, you can train at your own time. You are unaffected by the timings of your gym or your trainer. This is an excellent solution for stay-at-home moms, individuals who work from home, and individuals with an erratic work schedule. It’s nice not to have to pay for a gym membership. I love exercising at home, because that’s how I started. It’s fun and I enjoy it even today. I have a treadmill that faces a large TV, some dumbbells and a never-say-die attitude. That’s all it takes. With the number of tools available today, it is simple to set up a gym atmosphere in the comforts of your own home. I train most of my clients in their own home.

To get results at home, you need self-motivation and discipline, since you are going to be on your own. It’s not as hard as you think and can be enjoyable and beneficial. When you are committed mentally to pursue a leaner, energized and dynamic fitness level, changes happen much faster. Register on my website to get a free, full colour, printable exercise routine for home exercise.

There are some things that can derail home exercise.

It’s likely your hectic schedule or a long commute discourages you from exercise. Sometimes, an individual can get intimidated by the social atmosphere of a health club. After all, if a club is a place where people flirt more and exercise less, you might find yourself less inclined to go! It could also be crowded, and many people do not like waiting in line for the equipment. With home exercise, there is not waiting period. Despite the popularity of health clubs, many individuals are now exercising at home. In fact, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported a study conducted by Stanford University. The study said exercising at home is just as beneficial as working out at a health club. Interestingly, the study also found people who trained at home were more likely to stick with their program than those who exercised at a club.

Strength Training Exercises At Home For The Upper Body and Abdominals.

For best results, warm up for 10-15 minutes with light aerobic exercise (walking, cycling, jogging). Deep breathing and stretching for 3-5 minutes before you begin strength training helps the muscles relax and rejuvenate.

The following exercises do not require any equipment, other than a pair of dumbbells.

This is a unique method that I have developed on my own, and it has helped thousands of clients get results. You can view my clients in action with videos of home exercises and download full color exercise routines by registering on my websites mentioned at the end of this article.

Push-ups

Seated Rows

Triceps Dips

Shoulder Raises

Overhead Shoulder Presses

Lateral Shoulder Raises

Biceps Curls

Regular Abdominal crunches

Reverse Abdominal crunches

Standing Trunk twists

By: Nitin Chhoda

About the Author:

Are you looking for a way to decorate your home inexpensively and give it a warm and inviting feeling? Displaying photos of family and friends around your home immediately invites people to get a glimpse of what is important to you. It also helps to make them feel welcome in your home.

There are many items on the market right now to make this process easy. Wall ledges with grooves to hold frames in place can be found at many stores. Hanging two or three ledges on an expanse of wall and placing large framed photos on them is an eye catching way to decorate with your personal photos.

Sets of table top frames can be purchased. These sets contain two or more (sometimes even as many as 15) coordinating photo frames in various sizes to make decorating simple. Placing coordinating frames around a room – some on a side table, some on a mantle, some on top of a bookcase – can help give your room a pulled together feeling.

To complement your holiday decorating, buy some seasonal frames and place personal photos of past holidays in them. Place them around the house at holiday time. You can change out the photos from year to year, making this a very inexpensive way to change your decorating each year.

If you’d like to put a little more work and creativity into decorating your home with personal photos, try one of these ideas.

Create a Wall Collage of Black and White Photos

With today’s digital technology, making copies, cropping, and color enhancing your photos is easy and affordable. Try using this technology to create an inexpensive collage of black and white photos on a large open area of wall space in your home.

If you have old black and white photos of relatives you can mix them with recent photos. Vary the size of the prints and purchase inexpensive mats and frames for them. For added pop and contrast, vary the width of some of the mats, also.

You will need to create a template for your collage. Measure the dimensions of the wall space you will be using. Tape together pieces of newspaper to the exact dimensions and lay them on the floor. Then arrange your framed photos on the newspaper until you find a configuration you like.

Once you’ve found an arrangement that pleases you, trace each photo frame onto the newspaper. Then mark the spot where the hook is to be placed. Tape the newspaper onto the wall, nail in your hooks, and then remove the paper. You’re ready to hang your black and white photos.

Use an Old Wood Window as a Frame

Purchase, grab from your basement, or trash pick an old wooden window with grills. This makes a one of a kind frame for your personal photos. Clean up the old frame and paint it. Or, leave the old, distressed paint on the window for a vintage decorating style.

You will need as many personal photos as you have panes of glass. Make sure the photos are smaller than each pane, leaving some open glass to show the wall behind. This creates a mat for your photos. Affix the photos onto the glass and hang the old window securely on the wall.

With a little time and thought, you can bring photos that have been stored away in dark closets into the light. This simple, creative, inexpensive way of home decorating with your personal photos will make a big impact on those who enter your home.

By: Fransis Rodrigues

About the Author:

Graying of hair is not an unusual thing to happen. The age when graying starts depends on one’s genetic inheritance. Aging is often a reason that causes the hair to turn grayish. But premature graying of hair is a condition that demands the need to pay attention to the root cause. Nonetheless, graying of hair is a normal part of the aging process unless there is an underlying medical condition that is causing the lack of pigmentation.

Symptoms

Loss of hair colour before the age of 35 is termed premature greying. In turn, the thinner, grey hairs then have a chance to grow sooner and more rapidly than normal. The transformation is quick but it is not Causes of Greying of hair

Persons suffering from chronic cold and sinusitis and those who use warm water for washing their hair are more likely to be victims of this condition. A faulty diet and mental worries are the two primary causes of premature greying of hair. Lack of some of the B vitamins, iron, copper, and iodine in the daily diet is said to be a contributory factor. The common factor remains that grey hair has some pigment left in it, but not the amount it had when it was the natural color Other causes of premature greying of hair are an unclean condition of the scalp, washing the hair with hot water, drying it with an electric dryer, and use of hair dyes. Heredity is also a predisposing factor.

Home Remedies

Amaranth is another effective home remedy for hair disorders. Application of the fresh juice of the leaves of this vegetable helps the hair to retain its black color and prevents it from premature graying. It also helps the growth of the hair and keeps it soft.

Premature Greying of Hair treatment using Indian Gooseberry. The use of Indian gooseberry is the foremost among the home remedies found beneficial in the prevention and treatment of premature greying of hair. This is a valuable hair tonic for enriching hair growth and hair pigmentation.

Amla Hair Oil: Amla hair oil can be made at home itself, by adding fresh juice of Indian gooseberries to pure coconut oil. This should be boiled till the Amla juice is completely absorbed in the oil. This oil should be applied after the above said massage.

Liberal intake of curry leaves is considered beneficial in preventing premature graying of hair. These leaves have the property of providing vitality and strength to hair roots. New hair roots that grow are healthier and contain a normal pigment. The leaves can be used in the form of chutney, or may be squeezed in buttermilk. When the leaves are boiled in coconut oil, the oil forms an excellent hair tonic to stimulate hair growth and bring back hair pigmentation.

The role of proper diet in preventing and arresting premature graying of hair is very important. Eating a lot of fruits and vegetables is absolutely essential to facilitate the supply of essential vitamins and minerals.

By: peterhutch

About the Author:

Home schooling families do have access to grants. If you would be interested in knowing more about what kinds of grants are there for you, you would have to undertake a well-searched inquiry. As per general law one cannot approach the United States government for home school grants; the funds are not too large.

Then what is the way to find such grants? Online surfing is the best way to find out. These grants for home schooling do exist though they are not out in the open and therefore are tough to locate. But as said, these grants do exist and we look at ways at finding them.

At places where large corporations give grant is termed, as corporate grants. Large corporations have frequently given grants to charter & traditional schools. A few of these corporate grants also find their way to home schools but to receive a pie of it you need to know which grants you can send applications for.

Multinational behemoth IBM actively supports initiatives in the field of education; but none of these allowances are for home schools. Wal-Mart does give grants for homeschoolers though. All you need to do is get in touch with the company’s education section and put forward your application for grants. These departments are not authoritative so you could end up talking to various people on the same matter to get the desired results.

In the US home schooling grants from the government home schooling do not exist. Those people who are graduates via home schooling and are going to college can be given scholarships & grants, but federal governments have nothing as such for families of home schools. Canadian situation is completely opposite however. For instance in British Columbia $175 worth of grant is allowed for every kid that joins a home school prior to 1st November.

Grants are available to home schools but only from other home schools. Grants for every student in the state of Alaska is there for the textbooks in the shape of an annual grant. An association with some kind of a home school support group is very important. You can easily approach your home school group to inquire if they issue grants.

Quite of few do, but that may be as like study material and writing material, only a few select issue grants in monetary terms. Just incase your group of home school has a 501 (c) 3 standing as per US Tax code then it brightens your possibility of receiving a grant.

Last but certainly not the least, check with your ministry or even the church. These organizations, if incase they do not run a home school of their own would be more than happy to be of some help. They could donate books that have religious learning and material required by the home school. But remember receiving grants is not easy and you may be required to knock on a few more doors than you set out to but if you need them then do keeping looking for all kinds of grants possible.

By: Jane A.
